Flight is mathematically complex. So to perfect something that flies well requires the analysis of an Engineer, the creativity of an Artist, the patience of a Zen master, and the enthusiasm of a child.

Flight Lab 101 – The Art of Gliding

In this 2 hour workshop you will discover the elegance and engineering of flight by designing and building your own high performance gliders out of Depron foam or Balsa wood.

Students start by building a simple “Jet Wings” kit to practice the skills needed to design their own glider. These rubber band launched gliders look cool and fly great!

Picnic Plate SquadronNot only do these planes perform better than any “store-bought” gliders, they also provide a fun and hands-on introduction into the key aerodynamic principles of Lift, Wing loading, Weight and Balance, and the dynamic interaction of Pitch, Yaw and Roll.

Then students are invited to design and build their own gliders based on the six flight principles that they have learned. Instructors provide assistance or guidance as requested, but students are encouraged to explore their own ideas. Each class usually has a friendly competition to see whose glider can fly the longest or go the farthest.

Students not only learn STEM concepts in a fun and memorable way, they also develop a pride of ownership and craftsmanship because it is something that they built themselves.

Flight Lab 201 – The Art of Glider Design

Jet Glider

Once students understand the factors that influence good glider design, this workshop teaches them how to use software tools and a laser cutter to design and create their own “professional” quality gliders.

Students can use simple applications like PowerPoint or more advanced programs like InkScape (free) or CorelDraw (the commercial industry leader) to create and layout their aircraft designs just like a professional product designer.

The design can then be perfectly executed in balsa wood or foam using a laser cutter.
